The clock is ticking on the Mission Gateway Project a retail development that has started and stopped multiple times in the past 13 years.

What began as a plan to replace the Mission Mall in 2005 has generated headlines nearly every year since. No one understands that more than Tom Valenti, the developer of the 26-acre project along Johnson Drive, between Roeland Dr. and Roe Ave.

"I think one of the mistakes I personally made in the past is that I was trying to do too much too fast, and it hurt," Valenti said.

Valenti says with the city of Mission giving approval to his mixed-use development, and having the equity for the entire project, retailers and others are jumping on board.

"This whole food and entertainment complex, it think, is going to be just outstanding," Valenti said. "It will definitely work in our favor when it comes to leasing the other components of the project."

Valenti says they are in the process of finalizing building plans with the city's consultant and addressing sanitary wastewater issues with Johnson County.

He plans to make what he calls a big announcement in the next month and he expects to break ground this summer.
